The World Health Organization defines mental health as a “state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community.”
Amaranth Foundation accredited mental health social workers provide “wrap around” supportive care for clients of all ages, coping with living with a mental health problem or a mental health illness. These problems/ illness impact negatively on how a person thinks, feels behaves and interacts with other people. Our social workers are trained in a range of therapeutic methods for working with individuals, couples, groups and families. They provide support for people, and their families, coping with depression, panic attacks, anxiety, loss, grief, individual or family stress, peer pressure and bullying, family conflicts and breakdown, relationship problems, suicidal thoughts, sad or lonely, adjusting to change, confusion about the future…
Amaranth accredited mental health social workers have had to meet specialist accreditation in mental health issues to be Medicare registered. They have particular expertise in helping individuals whose mental health disorders co-exist with other problems such as family distress, drug and alcohol abuse, gambling problems, unemployment, disability, poverty and trauma. They are experienced in working collaboratively with other health professionals.
The Australian Association of Social Workers is the delegated assessing authority, on behalf of the Federal Government, for social workers interested in providing services through Medicare Australia. This assessment process is entitled Accreditation as a Mental Health Social Worker (AMHSW).
